Does my child need to see a speech pathologist? For infants and pre-school age children, if you have any concerns regarding your child's communication or feeding, it is best to seek advice sooner rather than later, as early intervention is key. Communication milestones for children aged 0 – 5 are available on Speech Pathology Australia's website. Here you can see the range of speech and language skills typically acquired at different ages and stages. For school age children, if a parent/carer or educator expresses concern for a child's learning or academic ability, a speech pathology assessment can help to identify specific learning and language needs.
-
Do I need a referral? No, you do not require a referral to see a speech pathologist. Referrals for a speech pathology assessment are often made by educators, GPs or allied health professionals who may have noticed a concern.

What can I expect for the initial assessment? The initial assessment – The first session typically consists of a parent consultation and/or assessment of the client, and is usually 60 minutes face-to-face. This consultation allows the clinician to gain background information and to screen the client’s current communication skills. Assessment tools will vary depending on the person's age and presenting concerns. For younger children, this may involve observing the child playing with their parent. For older children, it may involve formal standardised testing. Assessment information – A one-hour initial consultation is usually sufficient for the assessment of: stuttering, articulation (speech clarity), and straight forward expressive language delay. Further (more comprehensive) assessment may be required. The clinician will discuss with you if this is the case, including how many sessions may be required and the cost. The number of assessment sessions required will vary depending on the child’s age and the type of communication difficulty. A preschool/school visit may be suggested as part of the assessment process. Assessment reports – A summary or comprehensive report is recommended. If requested, it will be provided within 3 weeks from the completed assessment date. If no report is requested, 30 minutes will be added to the assessment time to give the therapist time to analyse assessment results and produce a therapy plan.
-
How many sessions will we need? The length of therapy is dependant upon many factors, including the presenting concerns, your goals and priorities, and the level of home practice completed. After an initial assessment and several therapy sessions, your therapist can discuss your options with you. We are happy to provide goals and treatment plans that fit within your budgeted number of sessions.
